Tigers Roar to 9th Grade State
Allen Takes Homes Mvp
In the second championship game of the night, it was the boy’s turns to crown a champion. The Whitehaven Tigers took on the Fayette Ware Wildcats who got the championship game knocking off the number 1 seeded Melrose Golden Wildcats. The game got out to a fast up and down scoring affair. Tim Allen would get 2 of his many baskets of the night with a 3 as Whitehaven took the early lead, 9-8. 6’2 guard Demarcus Turner scored on a lay up to keep the Tigers with only a 1 point lead, 15-14. His teammate Orlando Bass would tie it to end the 1st quarter, 19-19. 6’8 Octavious Ellis started to effect the game with his length blocking shots and intimidating the Wildcats into some pretty bad looking shots. He would get a great block that would lead to a lay up for Allen putting the Tigers up 10, 29-19.
Missed free throws and a technical foul would put the Wildcats down, 49-37 at the half. Jerail Lewis of Fayette Ware scored on 2 consecutive possessions to cut the Tigers lead to 7, 52-45 with 5:01 remaining in the 3rd. Whitehaven’s future Best of the Preps point guard, Thomas Bailey went through the Wildcats D, using his speed for a lay up. Ellis and Bailey would combine to give the Tigers a nice advantage going into the 4th quarter, 71-58. The Wildcats got down by as much as 19 points with 4:00 minutes in the game but a never say die attitude and clutch shooting got them back into the game. Turner was big for his team hitting 2 threes including 1 that made the score 88-82. Ellis would get 2 more points for the Tigers but this time Undre Murrell hit a 3 for only a 5 point lead with just under 40 seconds left. A wild scramble ensued after missed opportunities for a 3 with Whitehaven coming out of it with the rebound. Bailey would hit 1 of 2 free throws and not only seal Fayette Ware’s fate as runners up but as the 2007-2008 state champs with a score of 91-85.
Allen was huge in this game scoring a team high 3o points to lead his team. Octavious Ellis had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Bailey was also big for his team with 17. Memphis fans, remember the name, Demarc Turner. He scored a game high 32 points. Orlando Bass was also in double figures with 14 points. The Tigers will be a team to fear in 16-AAA in the coming years. 901PrepScoop.com would like to say congratulations to Coach Scooter and the Whitehaven Tigers.
