Super 80 Claims Fall League Title: Written by
Charles Lawson The anticipated matchup of the Super 80 versus the longest running fall league in the city, the CBL took place in front of a large crowd at Mississippi Boulevard and from the start, the game was action packed.
Not even two minutes into the game, their was a one hand flush by sophomore Melrose forward Adonis Thomas. The Super 80 has Joe Jackson but in the 1st half, Cedric Mcafee and Southwind guard, Darren Gray provided the scoring for their squad. Gray was perfect from the field scoring 7 points including a 3 and the high flying Mcafee got the crowd hyped with dunk on a pass from Ferrakhan Hall.
The Super 80 would go into the half only up 1, 38-36 but would stretch their lead in the second half. Quick shots by the CBL led to fastbreak dunks by the Hall and Jackson to put their team up 56-42 with 13:12 left in their in the second half. The Super 80 got up 16 before the CBL answered with a 16-6 run as the Eric Robinson squad started to look tired. An errant shot by Jones led to two Jackson free throws before Chris Crawford nailed a 3 to make the score 69-66, Super 80. Once again, missed opportunites one being a lay-in by the CBL, made the score 73-69 in a span of 30 seconds with dunks by Todd Mayo and Jackson again. Final score 75-71, Super 80 in this 1st annual event. Jackson led the Super 80 with 20 points with his high school teammate Ferrakhan Hall getting 17. Crawford also had 20 and Anthony Jones had 14. Great jobs by both leagues and put one in the win column for the Super 80. See you there next year.
Madracus Wade (PG) - Speed, quickness and being about 6'2 is not bad for a highschool 2 guard but try 6'3 with the same qualities and being a point guard and you become special. Wade is D-1 coaches dream. For the last 2 years, he played for Coach Jerry Johnson, his job was to defer to other scorer i.e. Ken Torry and Jarvis Jones but this year, its his time to score and show everyone what type of guard he is. He is a great competitor defensively as well as he can cause fits with his one the ball defense mainly due to his underestimated quickness and arms longer than airplane wings. He's the leader obviously even with Russell Hill transferring in. Double A may be a little down this year so their is a bit of possibility to get back to Mufreesboro. If he plays the way he's capable of playing, they could make their third straight trip.
Jasmine "Tootie" Robinson ( PG/SG) - In order to be a good ball player, you have to have attitude and swagger and it would help if you could ball a little bit. Robinson has all that and more. The 5'6 scorer is fearless going to the rim and can shoot it deep and with range. Play up close and it a crossover and possibly an oh and ah from the crowd because she's just put a J in your face. Last year, Overton tasted the postseason and they are hungry for more. Robinson must lead this young group if they want to be playing in late February and March in the postseason. She may even have to play a little point guard maybe more than she would like but she must become more accustomed to that as she will be a college point guard. The Lady Wolverines will go as far as Robinson can take them but with her talent, she could lead them into a surprising finish and a run at Houston High School.
