Saints Can't Ride The Wave
Mitchell and Pressley
Play Big

With all of the city and county schools games cancelled due to expected bad weather, you knew that Friday night’s game would be electric. Fans from around the city including Memphis assistant coach Derrek Kellog were in attendance but Christian Brothers even without bigman Caldwell Starnes wanted to quiet the huge crowd in attendance.
Both teams came hot with each team making its first 4 baskets. Senior Alex Pressley connected on a 3 with 3:10 in the 1st quarter before Elgin Lee got a nice pass from Jake Mccrary to tie it 14-14. Briarcrest star Leslie McDonald only had 2 points in the 1st due to picking up his second foul and forcing him to sit on the bench.
The top 20 junior in the country got two buckets including a pull up jumper in pretty fashion to put the Saints up 21-20 with 6:10 left in the second quarter. Junior Drew Barham scored on back to back possessions to give the Wave a little breathing room The Brothers would use a 16-8 run to end the half, 36-28. Greg Wooten would start the second on a driving lay up off the glass but Pressley would continue his terrific shooting hitting a 3 and putting his team up 9, 39-30. Purple Wave point guard Martin Mitchell’s jumper from the top of the key gave his team their biggest lead of the game, 41-30. McDonald went coast to coast and Wooten got a 3 to go down to cut it to 5, 41-36. Briarcrest would get it as close as 3 but a Jay Pallme 2 would end the 3rd with Christian Brothers still leading, 52-46.

The fireworks were not
over as the Saints got closer on Johnny Wiliams spinning jumper. McDonald started to have his way like Burger King scoring with a jump hook and getting a steal for a two hand slam to give his team their first lead since the 2nd quarter, 59-58 with 2:45 left in the 4th. Christian Brothers went cold like the weather outside until that kid that I was talking about earlier hit another 3 (Pressely) to put his team back up 61-59. The Purple Wave went to the stall tactic with Briacrest committing 4 fouls over a 1 minute period. Mitchell was fouled but he missed the front end of a 1 and 1 giving the Saints a chance to tie it on 2. Elgin Lee‘s 2 point attempt came up short and they fouled Pressely. He missed the second of the 2 free throws giving Briarcrest one more chance with 8.6 seconds left. Their 3 attempt went long giving the Brothers a great win and an edge over Saints if the two meet up again.

Mitchell and Pressley both had nice nights with Mitchell scoring 19 points and Alex Pressley getting 18 including hitting 5 3-pointers.. McDonald had 8 points in the 4th quarter on his way to 23 for the game. Wooten chipped in with 19.

Key Play of the Game
After Mitchell missed the front end of the 1 and 1, Lee’s 2 attempt may have been questionable after Leslie McDonald had been playing very well in the 4th quarter. Lee’s a scorer but sometimes you have to go to your go to guy.
