2. Memphis Bearcats Coach Alvertis London seems to like his team a lot and honestly, he should. They played the War Eagles close both of their games this weekend and maybe a sleeper team headed into sub-state. They have above average guards in Martavious Newby and Adam Weary and surprising point guard play in Alevertis London Jr. Their big men play maybe where it’s at for the Bearcats with 6-4 Craig Hill and 6-3 Jerron Washington. Hill is a stud shot blocker and he can score around the basket. Don’t sleep on the Bearcats or you could come away with an L.

3. Memphis Ballers Guard play, guard play and more guard play will drive the Ballers led by Alex Anderson, Tobey Baker and Jamal Donaldson. Donaldson maybe one of the most talented 8th graders that I’ve seen all year. They also will receive scoring punch off the bench with Darius ‘Smiley’ White who may start some games for Coach Anderson. Cadarrious Shepherd will hold down the middle with his defense and effort on the boards.  They may have to get something from Jacquenez Franklin in order be that team that some may not want to play but with Anderson and Baker’s shot making ability especially from deep, they will always be in games.

AAU Observations

901PrepScoop kicked off it spring AAU coverage with the Mayb on Saturday and the Slam-Dunk Championship at Central High School. A few teams were very impressive with their overall team talent but with this being many of the team’s first games together, a bit of rust were obvious. Here are some observations from the Mayb and the Slam Dunk Championship.

1.Memphis War Eagles (The Y)  Cameron Golden, Blake Johnson, Demarc Richardson and that's just a few of the very and I mean very talented WareEagles led by Coach Holmes. The Y has virtually all of the top 10-15 players in the class of 2012 and appears capable of making a run at the AAU national championship. One thing may hinder them and it maybe within. Will egos get in the way? All of these young players are used to be the man for their respective teams. What will they do when they are relegated to playing 5-10 minutes a game because the player in front of them is having a monster game? My guess is, they will be fine and be in contention for the national championship come July. Don't be surprised to see an addition to that team in the next few weeks.

4.Memphis Hoopers (15s)  Shaq Walker continues to show why he's a top 20 caliber player in his class. The 5-11 guard is a shooter with point guard skills as well. Another Manassas guard, Chris Porter didn’t play much varsity this year but that was because he was injured a majority of the year but don’t be fooled. Porter notched a 40 point game this year on the junior varsity level. Hamilton’s Jeffrey Graham also will provide scoring from the 3 or 4 spot.

5.YOMCA (16S)  Loaded from guard to bigs. Tank Brown could probably playup and still hold his own with the older Y team (Leslie McDonald, Reggie Bucnkner) Marquis Wilson is such a good scorer that it’s almost scary how good he could be by his senior year. He also has his teammate Daryl Marshall at the point, Overton sniper, Darren Gray, Trezevant big man Antoine Cathey in the middle and who I think is one of the most athletic big men in the city, Nate Rucker. They lost to the Trotters on Saturday but don’t worry, the Y will get better and better, trust me. Again like I said, their loaded.

6.Memphis Trotters (16s) Anthony Jones leads Coach Kater’s squad running the show at the point guard position. With his length and passing ability, he’ll be bigger than most opposing point guards and he should be able to shoot over anyone guarding him Another very interesting player is Joe Brady. The 6-4-6-5 forward is an exciting player who should make a splash on the scene this summer and next year. Could be the surprise of the summer in Memphis. Tramarcus Toney, Twann Oakley both of Melrose, BTW forward Kerry Love and  one the most athletic big men in the city, Nate Rucker.

Girls
1.       Team Idlewild (9th and 10th) - Will probably play mostly Mayb this summer but will get solid contributions from a foursome of  Shevontae Bright, Melinda Hull, Khadijah Beavers and Victoria Jackson. They must gell together but that shouldn't be a problem for Coach Muhammad's group.

2.       Memphis Select (9th and 10th) -  Ashley Small leads this team along with do it all 8th grader, that's right 8th grader Cornelia Fondren getting buckets. Re-Re Shields is one of my favorite point guards in the class of 2011 despite being tiny in stature but big in heart and big in her play.
