State Championship Pulls Into The Station
Jackson Hits For 35 Piece
In the final match up of the day, Memphis represented well. Two teams who by the way had matched up earlier in the season took on each other at the Murphy center on the campus of MTSU, the Raleigh Egypt Pharaohs and the White Station Spartans. Raleigh had a little bit more of an easier night than the Spartans had the night before with a 20 point win of Walker Valley. The Spartans on the other hand had to fight off a tough Northeast team for a 10 point win. While it appeared that this was a hometown game because of the two teams playing, it was a little more on the line Saturday night as for the second time in two years; two Memphis teams were playing in the Triple A state championship. Both teams made 11 shots in the first half of the game but Raleigh’s shot selection was a little bit on the I don’t know about those side as they trailed 31-25 going into the half. The Spartans were on the short end of the rebounding department, with White Station getting on the glass for seven more rebounds, 19-12. The biggest difference in the half and the game may have been on the free throw situation for Raleigh Egypt, Try 33 percent on 3-10 shooting from the charity stripe. There must have been a message sent to Raleigh’s players in the locker room, get the ball to Anthony Jones. The 6’5 senior went to work, scoring his teams first 5 points including hitting a high arching 3 as they cut it to 1, 31-30 with 7:25 left in the 3rd. As usual though, Joe Jackson was Joe Jackson. The junior point guard, who had scored 17 points in the first half scored with an easy 2 off the window. Marvin Williams who fouled out with 2 points, hit his only shot of the game as White Station went up 7, 37-30. Over a one minute stretch, Coach Adams team score 6 straight points, after another deuce by Jones on a rebound put back but the Pharaohs foul trouble was adding up and fast. With Gentry Hines already with 3 in the first half, Jones got his 4th with 46.2 seconds left in the 3rd as his team found themselves down, 44-37 entering the final quarter of the season for both teams.
Raleigh much like BTW picked up the pressure by pressing the Spartans and having success even going up by 1, 47-46 after a great crossover right to left that made the crowd go crazy but their was this kid name Jackson who came right back with a middle of the lane jumper. Free throws continued to be a problem for Raleigh getting chances at the line to take 6 or 7 point advantages but rarely putting together 2 free throws in a row as they shot only 50 percent for the game missing 13 free ones. They went up 5 with 2:10 remaining in the game but Julian Burton got a steal, got hit hard plus the foul but he missed the free throw with the Pharaohs still holding on, 54-53. With the score 56-54, the hero of the Liberty game that sent them to the state, Andre Hollins was at it again. Two of the biggest plays of the game were made with 1:08 left in the game. Hollins got a steal after a turnover by Hines, hit a lay up got fouled but once again missed the free throw tying the score, 56 all but the other play was the fouling out of Hines who picked up his 5th foul hurting Raleigh Egypt severely.

Just A Bit To Late: BTW Loses By 1
Furious Rally Almost Notches Title
If you read the title ahead, you already know what happened in the Saturday’s Double A championship but believe me, there was plenty of excitement.  You would think that the Warriors goal had a lid on it for a majority of the 1st half as they struggled similar to Manassas in the first game shooting the basketball. How bad was it? Try 4-23 shooting, if you’re not a mathematician, that’s 17 percent. I almost forgot about the 0-10 they put on the board  from 3 scoring only get this, 2 points in the first quarter but Fulton had only managed 8 themselves.  Not only were they not shooting the ball well, they were not rebounding the basketball as 5’10 Robert Boyd of Fulton had 4 offensive rebounds in the first half.
Memphis Puts On For The City:  Manassas Captures State Title
Disqualification Of Buckner Can’t Stop Fate
If you remember the state title game last year, don’t tell the Tigers that. They were trying to prove that the second time not the third is a charm. Manassas had defeated the then undefeated Humboldt Viking on Wednesday, a feisty Grace Baptist team and now they had one more before they claimed the state title that eluded them last year. Both teams came out a little flat to start but Buckner showed why he’s the state leader in blocked shots with a huge get that out before a media timeout at the 4:57 mark of the first quarter. Sophomore Joe Northington hit the deck hard soon after pausing the game for a brief moment but he proved he was okay with a 3 to start the second quarter for a 10-4 Manassas lead. Double technical fouls were called on Buckner and Jarrod Johnson of the Crusaders who  wrestled for a rebound. With the Crusaders constantly throwing 2 defenders towards Buckner in the post and sometimes 3, the Tigers looked for scoring from others. Marcus Holloway who scored 12 points in game found him self in the right spot as Buckner saw him underneath for a bucket for a 14-12 score. After shooting 33 percent in the first half, you had to figure that the Tigers would shoot it better in the second and they did but without the teams star player. Holloway and Joe Northington came out with a trey a piece as they pushed their lead to 12, 24-12. Buckner would score on a jump stop in the lane and another off an offensive rebound as he seemed to get him self going but what happened next, puzzled not only him but the entire Manassas fan base.
Buckner takes a bow!
The Pharaohs had a chance to win it but pg Jeremy Holmes drove left and passed to Tank Brown who had 15 points in the game but he missed but wait, a tip by Fondren, a miss as well giving it back to White Station. The Spartans had it with 4 seconds left but the best shot they could get was a prayer by Jackson sending the game into overtime, a fitting end for a game of this magnitude. The team with the least foul trouble is normally the team that gets the advantage in an OT game and this was the case for White Station. Jackson got the first 2 on a reverse but another huge blow came for Raleigh Egypt when Jones got his 5th foul sending him to the bench. Brown tried to go at Ferrakhan Hall but he got the biggest block of his life with 2:15 left. Up next for the foul out squad, Brown who went to the bench after fouling Jackson. The game wasn’t over though. After two made free throws by Jackson, Reggie Fondren hit a wing 3 for a 63-61 lead for White Station. Add more drama to that, a turn over by Jackson with 1:16 left but another huge and I mean huge miscue by Raleigh. After calling a timeout because they couldn’t get it the first time, the Pharaohs got a 5 second call on them for the game’s biggest turnover at that point. Jackson would be fouled again forcing him to the line. He made 1 of 2 as Raleigh still had hope, but another turn over; this time on the travel call dimming their state championship hopes. It still wasn’t over yet as Jackson stepped to the line and missed 2 free throws giving Raleigh one more try for a tie. A long 3 would be missed sending White Station’s players on the court and giving them their fifth state title, 64-61.
It should come as no surprise; Jackson led all scorers with 35 points. Andre Hollins chipped in 10 points. Raleigh was led by Brown’s 15 points. Jones and Harris had 13 points a piece.
Representing Memphis on the all tournament team was, Joe Jackson, Ferrakhan Hall, Rashad Harris, Ronald Brown, Anthony Jones and Andre Hollins. Jackson was named game Mvp but did not receive the Mr.Basketball award in a surprising fashion.

When the half ended, it was 21-8 Fulton and things didn’t seem to get any better as they once again came out shot challenged. Down 20 to start the final quarter, 41-21, the Warriors couldn’t go out like that and they sure didn’t. Bridges hit his teams first 3 of the game as the BTW looked to pick up the defensive pressure and they did in a big way. They got 3 straight steals and converted off every miscue by  Fulton. If the Falcons looked rattled, it’s because they were as BTW outscored them 16-6 over the next 5 minutes cutting a once 20 point deficit to 7, 47-40. Fulton of course went into stall mode and scored on a Courtland Styles easy lay in as they caught the Warriors asleep. Fulton turned it over but they had a huge one with 48 seconds left as Lacorwyn Anthony went baseline and the foul but he missed the free throw. Martavious Newby scored on finger roll to make it 52-50 with 30 seconds but Styles made 2 free throws. Anthony went to baseline again to make it a one possession game but the Warriors fouled the wrong person, Jalen Steele the MVP of the game. He made 2 free throws making it 2 possessions once again, 56-52. Instant offense Doug Rosser who scored 9 points in the game tried to draw the foul but missed giving it back to Fulton for 2 free throws. Boyd missed both though with 5 seconds remaining. Larry McGaughy hit a bank 3 to make the score 56-55 but BTW assistant ‘s complained about 2 much time running off the clock with the time running down to 00.3 seconds. There was little or  nothing BTW could do but watch as Fulton threw it in and earned their second state championship straight, 56-55.
McGaughy tied for the game high scorers with 22 points. Travis Bridges had 10. All tournament players were Douglas Rosser, Martavious Newby, Larry McGaughy all from BTW. The Warriors played a great game in the second half but just came up short.
After the rebound put back, he received a technical foul on what appeared to be nothing as he turned to run down the court. Irate is what Coach Gerald Harris became but what was even worse, Buckner’s second technical disqualified him for the game. Up 30-17 at the time, now it became a game, well at least that’s what Temple’s fans thought.  Marcus Holloway played big down the stretch handling his team with poise as they ran off a 15-2 run on the Crusaders.  With under 5 minutes left in the game, what was the score, the other teams fans didn’t know, they had took one to the Temple by the Tigers. Can you say STATE CHAMPIONS? Manassas can. The final score, 60-34.
Holloway who was the game MVP scored a team high 12 points for his team with Kindle Woodard getting a double double with 10 points and 10 boards. Buckner had 8 points and 10 rebounds in his final game as a Tiger. 4 Tigers were named to the all tournament team, Joe Northington, Marcus Holloway, Kindle Woodard and Mr. Basketball winner, Reggie Buckner.
