Jackson Leads The Way
It seemed like a normal game; teams warmed up and opposite coaches spoke and laughed before tipoff. Other than the temperature constantly dropping and consistent rain coming down outside, it just seemed like a regular season game but this was something much more than that. A state birth was on the line at the house of the Pharaohs as the White Station Spartans came in playing some their best basketball of the season. The Spartans were a much different team than when they lost to Raleigh-Egypt earlier in the season, 66-63. The young team that many saw in the early season was now a team that had been through the early trials of the season and had now started to peak and to add they had a 6-8 waiting in the wings. Former Mus star, Ferrakhan Hall was now eligible after sitting out the required year but was supposed to a pickup started as a letdown. The Spartans got down early, 7-0 on an Anthony Jones free throw line jumper at the 5:45 mark in the 1st. Hall was cold until he got a foul and 1 but he missed the free throw. Utep signee Arnette Moultrie scored 4 points in a row including going around freshman Marvin Williams for a lay up to end the 1ST quarter. A lot of early fouls made the fans upsets as White Station started to get a little more comfortable in the 2nd quarter. 6-6 senior Danny Harris got involved the action scoring off a pretty pass from Julian Burton as White Station took the lead by 1, 26-25. 5-9 reserve point guard Brandon Mccormick got a putback but Joe Jackson went coast to coast and tied it up, 34-34 at the half. Marquette Murrell got 2 on an offensive rebound but Marvin Paige did his best Harris impression scoring 6 points in the 3rd quarter but sleeping giants didn?t stay sleep to long for White Station. Jackson got it going in the 4th. The 5-11 guard picked Gentry Hines clean in the middle of the court and scored on a lay up as White Station went up 48-46 in the 4th with 6:40 left. You just knew that Hall would be involved in the game at some point and he picked a great time to do it. Another and 1 by the talented junior put the Spartans up 58-55 with 3:54 remaining. Things got a little chippy between Jackson and Pharaoh guard, Reggie Fondren as they jawed back and forth before a Coach Jimmy Adams timeout. Fondren was called for a foul on Jackson away from the ball as the fans became irate. Senior Kaylon Durham got a lay up and a hard fall to the floor as the Spartans took control, 63-58 with 1:55 left. Hines would be fouled on a 3 attempt and make all 3 but Jackson got fouled as White Station inbounded the ball. He and freshman Andre Hollins would combine for 6 free throws over the final 1:15 of the game as White Station got the win and a trip to Mufreesboro, 71-66.
As usual, Jackson was Jackson with 28 points including 14 in the 4th. Hall scored in double figures with, 11. Gentry Hines and Arnette Moultrie paced the Pharaohs with 18 and 11 points. On to the state goes the Spartans.
