Darious Paige and Nick Mason both Juniors
Jaguars Bite The Spartans
Southwind Avenges Fed Forum Loss
Just when you thought the season couldn’t get any crazier, Tuesday night arrived for Southwind as they looked to knock off 901PrepScoop’s number 3 team in the city, the White Station Spartans. Jaguar point guard Darious Paige came out hot connecting on a 3, to make the score 18-13 Southwind before  senior Ferrakhan Hall quieted the home crowd. The 6’8 senior forward put Southwind’s Raul Aguilar on camera phones all over the gym as he dunked on him and drew the foul with 1:10 left in the 1st quarter. Nick Mason would go on hit a long 3 pointer to end the quarter, 23-16.
Junior Montez Phifer did his best impersonation of Rodney Carney taking a pass and taking off for the flush to make the score, 25-18. Of course you know, Joe Jackson was there to do his normal brilliant scoring. He would be involved on 3 straight scores for his team including a pretty no look pass to Andre Hollins and a 3 pointer to cut the lead to 3 as White Station went on a 7-0 run. 6’6 sophmore Marvin Williams had one of many put backs to make the score, 30-29 as the Spartans got closer but they would find themselves down by 5 going into the half, 34-29.
Former Overton standout Darren Gray started to become more aggressive in the opening minutes of the 3rd scoring on a tear drop and going around Hall for a deuce. Southwind would go up 7, 45-38 with 5:36 left but once again, here was a run by White Station with you know who leading the charge. Jackson’s lay up plus one would tie the game 45-45. The junior sensation would eventually put his team up for his team’s first lead since the 1st quarter, 51-49. Montez Phifer of Southwind would hit  a jumper fading away before Patrick Coleman found Daryl Wright under the goal on a great pass as both teams went into the final period tied, 53-53. As both teams flip flopped the lead, you just had a since that it was Southwind’s night and that they would get a break some how. After Jackson made 2 free throws with 39 seconds left, the Jaguars had their opportunity. After being forced into a timeout, the Jaguars inbounded the ball to Darious Paige who began to advance to the sideline but wait, a foul on Julian Burton, giving them 2 free throws and a chance to seal it with 3.9 seconds left in the game. Paige would hit both giving the Spartans the ball back with decent time.  A long pass went to Burton who caught it and appeared to have some daylight for a lay up but Gray cam out of no where to block the shot giving Southwind their biggest win of the season, 71-69. Paige led his team with 24 points with Darren Gray providing 14 points with 10 of those in the second half. Jackson led all scorers with 28. Marvin Williams had a nice game with 14 points for the Spartans.  The Jaguars improve to 16-6.
