Scorpions Sting Eagles
Guest Impresses In Win
On a day after powerful storms ripped through the area, basketball was the furthest thing from some people’s minds, but for defending state champions, the Southwind Scorpions and American Way Eagles, the season was on the line as the second round of the large schools sectionals resumed.
Guest drops 28
The Eagles who have been up and down all year showed up on Saturday and knocked off Shadowlawn, a team that many thought would have a chance to upset the Chiefs if their paths crossed again. Southwind jumped out early 7-0 thanks to a very active Odarius Guest lay up. The Eagles would fight back using a 9-0 run including a and 1 by Jajuan Johnson with 1:40 left in the 1st quarter. Guest got it going in a big way in the second quarter scoring 9 points as Southwind’s 2-2-1 press started to bother the Eagles. Kadeem Cathey of American Way got the Eagles within 3, 22-19 before Dresean Looney got 2 points on a short jumper in the middle of the lane. A 30-21 score ended the 1st half, with Southwind up. Fans and parents chanted let’s go A-Way but Southwind starting strong and with a little flash thanks to a no look from Looney to Myron Hardy. Quentin Cochran from the Eagles stopped the drought for his team on a lay up at the 2:40 mark in the 3rd for a 40-24 Southwind lead. The Scorpions were up 20, 52-32 with 5:02 remaining but the Eagles had 1 last push left. Nathen Cole and Cochran’s 2 got American Way within 7, 54-47 with 30 seconds left. A Jajuan Johnson 3 rimmed in and out which would have cut the lead to 4. A valiant effort was made by the Eagles in the end but it was too little to late as Soutwind ended their season, 57-46.

Odarius Guest led all scorers with 23 points. Cortez Mcclee added 14 for the Scorpions. Jajuan Johnson and Quentin Cochran were in double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively. Next stop for Southwind, the Chiefs train in what maybe the most anticipated game of the Middle School season.
