J3 Pours In 27 In Emotion Filled Game
In front of a packed gym with a standing room only crowd two teams both undefeated went to the court and from the start of the game, it had a state playoff game atmosphere. Being down only 9 at the half, Germantown’s Jerry Johnson Jr and Devin Thornton wanted to show that their team would not go away. Both had buckets including a 3 that the cut the lead to 5, 35-30 but Johnathan “J3"Williams and Darren Shabazz (picture right) would counteract that with a put back by Williams and a two 3-pointers by Shabazz as his team went up by 13, 43-30. Thornton would get an and one before the 3rd ended but his teams was still down, 48-37 entering the 4th quarter.
The Red Devils would go on a run of their own thanks to Johnson who hit two threes and got a boost from uncharacteristic technical foul on Williams who protested a charge call on the previous play. He would go on to hit two free throws before Courtland Crutcher tied it with another trey ball to make the score, 50-50. Germantown would go on to take the lead before Myron Hardy’s and one with 3:00 minutes in the game to make the score, 57-56. The Red Devils would not score again as the jumpers that they were hitting in the 3rd quarter missed in the 4th. Southwind kept the game close in the closing minutes due to turnovers but the Germantown simply couldn’t capitalize on some bad Scorpion turnovers. Southwind would go on to get the win and stay undefeated, 62-56 and improve to 4-0. I asked Shabazz about everyone saying that American Way is the best team and he said, “We coming for them, they got some good guards but we coming”. Williams led to both teams with 27 point along with Hardy’s 15 points and Darren Shabazz helping his team with 14. Johnson and Thornton were in double figures with 14 and 13 points a piece.
