H. Wells turns heads

H. Wells turns heads
My intent tonight was to go and watch a Matthew Butler and Jawan Johnson matchup that I thought could have been great to see but I my sight was slightly detoured when I arrived early and saw some of the girls game. American Way's girls won the game but I happen to see a 6'1 8th grader by the name of Henrietta Wells. Wells ran the floor well and even blocked a few shots. She even had a few putbacks showing that she could be an effective rebounder and if given the right situation, could flourish in a year or two. Once someone gets with her and is able to show her the type of players that she could be, the sky could be the limit because she definitely has the tools and their is no reason to think that she won't grow a couple more inches. Remember that name, Henrietta Wells.

The other surprise of the night was a 6'4 8th grader from Dallas Texas who has transferred in. His name, Dannon Cavil and for the most part I was impressed. Although he's still raw offensively he shows glimpses of a promising future in Memphis. He tried to bring the ball up a few times and when he was trapped, he picked it up and found open teammates even making a few nice passes for scorers. He plays the center/forward spot for the Patriots but could develop into a 3 once he gets some individual work over the summer. He even tried the floater with his left hand prompting me to think he was a natural lefty but when he shot 2 free throws right handed, I thought, this kid could be special. Much like his classmate, he just needs to be put in the right situation next year to become the player that he can be,which could be very good by his sophmore year if not sooner.

As for the game between boys, it was to much pressure defense from American Way as they went on a 23-4 run and ended up with a 37-14 lead at the half on the way to a 59-35 win over Colonial. The Eagles were lead by Jawan "The Truth" Johnson with 17 points and 11 rebounds. I will say, I am a Johnson believer now. He scored those points in about 15 mintues total during the game. Kadeem Cathey was also big with 14 points attacking and getting steal.
