Wildcats Are Golden
Melrose Captures 16-AAA Crown

In his first season at the helm of the Melrose Golden Wildcats program, Coach Johnson has endured some harsh criticism. Losing some early games caused some Melrose faithful to wonder why they hired the former Ridgeway and Cordova assistant coach but on Wednesday night, all the talk could come to an end with a win in the district championship at the home of the host team the Central Warriors.
Twann Oakley chipping in with 14. Sam Hill and Chris Carr were in double figures with 18 for Hill and 13 for Carr. Congratulations Golden Wildcats. Move over Hamilton, Fairley and Central, their maybe a new king of the district for the next couple of years and their led by Coach JJ.

The Warriors came in a very confident having knocked off a hot Hamilton team that had won 8 straight games including beating the Warriors the week prior. Melrose beat Fairley by 14 on Monday and now with a number 1 seed on the line for Friday’s regional tournament they knew they had a chance at something special. Sophomore point guard Masceo Harmon came off the bench and immediately made an impact with a free throw line jumper and scoring on a 3 point play as the Warriors went up 16-9 with 4:55 remaining in the second. Tim Peete and junior Chris Carr put their team up 11 thanks to a 3 by Peete and steal and lay up by Carr as they went up on Melrose frustrating Coach Johnson and his young team, 23-12. The Warriors built a big lead on back to back threes by Carr for a 36-20 lead. Quarterback Tramarcus Toney started to get into the action hitting a trey and scoring on a short j from the elbow as the Wildcats started to claw their way back. Golden Wildcat guard Chris Mason got Melrose within 4, 38-34 to end the 3rd quarter but things were just starting to get interesting. Tyler Stone got a nice pass from Peete as they went back up 7, 44-37. Toney got a deep ball to go down and Chris Jones got a steal to cut it to 2, in a span of 30 seconds. Toney would not be stopped hitting another 3 and getting a steal to put Melrose up for the first time in the game, 47-46 with 3:00 remaining in the game. Both teams went toe to toe trading baskets until Chris Mason hit 2 free throws to tie it 51-51 as Central called a timeout with 41 seconds left. They held the ball for the last shot but Peete’s 3 attempt would fall short sending the game into overtime. Central leading scorer in the game, Sam Hill would foul out after scoring overtime’s first basket. Another 3 by Toney and a Tevin Wilkerson short elbow jumper put Melrose up, 58-57. Once again with the game on the line, it was up to Peete. The sophomore guard took inside the trey line but missed the jumper with 7.2 seconds left. Adonis Thomas was fouled but he could not convert the front end of the 1 and 1 giving the Warriors one last chance. Harmon drove to ball to the left wing trying to kick it to Carr but the ball went out of bounds giving Melrose the win and the district championship, 58-57.
