Liberty’s Holds On For MLK Crown
Tarius Johnson Big In The 4TH
Liberty has been pretty successful for the most part against Memphis teams so far this year. Having gone 4-0, I would say that was pretty good wouldn’t you but Friday was different as they played Craigmont, a team with some of the best guards in the city. Desmond Thompson did his best to keep Liberty from going 5-0 scoring every time it seemed like his team needed a basket. From the 1st quarter, little one hand runners were his game as he tied the score 14-14. Liberty turned the pressure up on Craigmont forcing them into 5 straight turnovers to make the score 28-21 with 6:00 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. Rickey Williams of Liberty would drive and stop for the J to make the score, 43-36 to end the half.
The Champs of the MLK Tourney
Craigmont’s size in particular with 6’6 Akeem Anderson came into to play as he scored on two putbacks to  make the score 45-43 as the Chiefs looked to show that this would not be an easy victory for the Crusaders. Thompson and Terrance Durham’s tear drops led Craigmont to their first lead of the game, 49-48 with 3:56 in the 3rd quarter. Liberty’s ability to draw charges showed in the final minutes of the quarter going on an 11-2 run  beforeCedric Mcafee hit a jumper and draw foul to make the score, 61-57 to end the quarter. With 3 minute remaining, the Chiefs were up 75-70 when Liberty’s Tarius Johnson decided that his team would not lose. He hit two free throws and scored on a right hand hook in a span of 1 minute to make the score 77-75. Liberty would get a huge steal and Cordaro Williams would try and hit a 3pointer when they had an opportunity to get an easy lay-in but Johnson was there to rebound his miss and get fouled and tie the game on two free throw shots, 77-77 with 15.2 seconds left. The Chiefs would turn it over giving it back to Liberty. Mcafee would foul Rickey Williams and he would make both give his team the lead, 79-77. Craigmont would try a 3 but would miss with Johnson snatching the rebound giving his team the MLK championship and a record of 5-0 against Memphis teams so far. Tarius Johnson led all scorers with 27 with Kendall Anthony scoring 14 points. Desmond Thompson led Craigmont with 24 and Cedric Mcafee had 16.
