The Tigers seemed to be a little intimidated by the pressing of Melrose forcing turnovers and outrebounding the blue and gold Tigers. Jones would continue his terrific shooting hitting a 3 and a jumper to make it 34-15 with 5:50 in the 2nd. Senior Derrick Richards hit two shots to make 35-23 but Jones struck again with a 3, 45-30 at the half with Melrose leading comfortably. Both teams would go back and forth in the 3rd trading buckets. A dunk by McFagdon, jumper by Adonis Thomas then another dunk but this time by Nathen Rucker of Golden Wildcats. The Tigers played a little better in the 3rd but still trailed 64-50 going into the 4th quarter. Things started to get interesting when Reginald Buckner of Manassas dunked and Tre Payne got a steal and converted a tough lay up to make it 66-57 with 6:00 remaining in the 4th. A Tramarcus Toney off a rebound put the Golden Wildcats up 11 with 4:40 left. A crazy foul on a 3 attempt by Manassas made it 75-68 with Melrose still holding on. Chris Jones would become a factor in the end making at one point 6 free throws in a row to keep his team up. 80-74. Payne's lay up and maybe the biggest 3 of Eric Atkins prep career made 82-79 with 57 seconds left. Melrose turned it over on a steal by Shawn Kearney prompting one of best finishes of the young season. Richards came down off the steal and hit a 3 tying it 82-82. The senior guard wasn't done scoring on another steal, making a layup and the foul with 4 seconds remaining. Melrose could not get the shot off in time giving the Tigers an improbable win, 85-82. "Don't give up play to the end, we gone make some shots eventually said Coach Harris of Manassas. "We'll get them in the end and that's what the Tigers did.
Single A teams thinking about winning the state may want to think again. The road to Mufreesboro may lead through a street called Manassas off of Firestone. The big 3 for the Tigers combined for 69 points with Richards leading the way with 25 points. Junior Reginald Buckner had 23 and 9 rebounds and Atkins had 21. Melrose was led by the talented freshman duo of Chris Jones and Adonis Thomas with 23 for Jones and 17 by Thomas.

The Tigers made it to the championship game of the same tournament but fell to prep school, Nashville Christian. Freshman Chris Jones of Melrose came out like a man on a mission hitting 6 of his teams first 14 as they jumped on the Tigers, 14-9.
