MEMPHIS HIGH SCHOOL 2007-2008 TEAM PREVIEW
Melrose Golden Wildcats
A new season and a new coach has brought rejuvenation and excitement to the once proud basketball program at Melrose High School. As the 2007-2008 season gets underway, Coach Jermaine Johnson enters his first season as a varsity head coach after coaching Cordova’s freshman team to a city championship last year. A lot of Coaches have to make an adjustment to their new schools and that sometimes takes a year or two but with the talent that he has coming in, that shouldn’t be hard to do. Melrose added the best freshman class in the city in 6’5 Adonis Thomas, Tevin Wilkerson and Chris Jones. Thomas is a sensational player with the talent to be one of the top 10 players in Memphis regardless of class. Chris Jones is scoring point guard, who can knock down shots from all over the court and Wilkerson is 6’3 man child who could be the best player on the team at the end of the year. The new guys may get all the attention but Chris Mason, Quarterback Tramarcus Toney, and Courtney Pittman must lead if the Golden Wildcats are to compete in 16-AAA. Junior Chris Mason must become more aggressive offensively but he should thrive in Coach Johnson’s new system. Tramarcus Toney is a pretty good shooter but he may not be in basketball shape until December and football teammate Courtney Pittman, is a physical 4 man who was primarily used as a rebounder enforcer type last year but Coach Johnson seems excited about him. Another player who should get pretty good minutes is Southside transfer, Nate Rucker. He brings incredible athleticism and rebounding. Point guard Vashon Freeman could also spell Jones and may start a few games if Jones has jitters.
“We have a chance to surprise some people based off some scrimmages and teams that I’ve seen, but we’re so young” said Coach Johnson. He has a chance to solidify himself as one of the areas premiere coaches and it all starts in next weeks jamborees.
