Kirby Gives Ridgeway 1st Loss
The Kirby band members that were playing the song "Happy Feelings" before the game may not have known what the song meant but after Tuesday night, the Kirby basketball team sure did. With a packed crowd in attendance, Ridgeway came to the home of the Kirby Cougars looking to improve on their undefeated record while Kirby was looking to earn some respect after some questioned their team even after beating Raleigh Egypt earlier in the season. Junior Mario Bass got off to a hot start scoring the 1st 5 points for Kirby. Ridgeway was like Monday of last week, cold as ice going 0-7 in the opening minutes of the game. Kirby's senoir leader, Malcolm Burton would hit a step back 3 before Jason Jones got his first field goal of the game on a 3 of his own.

Burton had 9 points in the 4th quarter and finished with 18 to tie his teammate Mario Bass.. Jason Jones led all scorers with 19 points and Chris Downey had 14."It aint ever over" said Burton. Mario Bass would score 7 points in the 1st quarter putting his team up 15-7 on a lay up to end the 1st quarter. Senior Chris Price's 3 would give the Cougars their biggest lead up to that point, 20-7 pumping the Kirby crowd up. The 14-0 Roadrunners would not be a pushover going on a 22-9 run ending the half 30-29 with Kirby only up by 1. Ridgeway would take their 1st lead of the game on a Sampson Carter short jumper, 31-30 Roadrunner lead. Chris Price hit a 3 and got a steal for a lay up by Bass to put his team back up, 40-33 with 3:31 left in the 3rd. Senior point guard Chris Downey would get hot hitting 2 threes at the end of the quarter with Kirby still leading 42-39. His hothand would continue in 4th hitting 2 more long balls as Ridgeway used a 15-5 run over a 2:00 minute period to go up 54-44. Chris Price would cut the lead to 2, 56-54 as Kirby went on a run of themselves. Sophmore Marterrance Brock would hit a big 3 but Rockeem Henderson answered right back with a finger roll that cut Ridgeway's lead to 7, 63-56. Burton would be big down the stretch including a huge 3 after two misses at the line by Carter with 42 seconds left. Ridgeway could not convert free throws missing 6 down in the last 45 seconds and giving the relentless Burton a chance to do his magic. He would be fouled after 2 more missed free throws and make both putting Kirby up 66-65. Chris Downey drove hard to the rim but missed the shot and Junior Chris House got the rebound. House would make 1 of 2 free throws giving the Roadrunners a chance to tie it. A great pass was thrown to Brock who missed the 5 footer and gave Kirby the big win and Ridgeway their first loss of the season, 67-65.
