Battle of the Cats:
COUGARS TAKE THEIR RESPECT
Brenton Coleman defends the games final inbound pass.
Kirby Proves They Are For Real

With 6:58 left in the 3rd quarter some fans started to leave with the anticipation of a Melrose victory but I can guarantee they wished they would have stayed following the finish of last night’s game.  Chris Jones would make the crowd want more with a step back jumper to force a timeout by Kirby’s head coach. Kirby’s senior guard Mario Bass implored his team to get on the floor after a loose ball ended up in Melrose’s possession. Jones would hit another jumper to make the score 62-51 with 5:51 remaining in the game but that’s when the game turned and not for the better for the Golden Wildcats. Senior Brenton Coleman would hit a trey for the Cougars but there was that Chris Jones guy again with another jumper off the glass to make the score 68-62. Chris Price of Kirby would not be denied knocking down shot after shot all game but in the 4th quarter he hit two of his biggest buckets of the game. He brought his team within 2 on a 3-pointer to make the score, 69-67 with 1:57 and then tied after a steal and a lay up. Kirby’s defense would force the Golden Wildcats into another turnover on a jump ball. Chris House would grab rebound off his teams missed shot and get fouled forcing him to the line. He would knock down both free throws to put Kirby up, 71-69 but Chris Jones would be fouled on the next possession but sophomore would hurt his knee prompting Coach Johnson to make a decision on who would go to the line with 23.1 seconds left.
Tromarcus Toney would hit both to tie the game, 71-71. Cougar big man Ben Norfleet would rebound his own missed lay up and put his team up by 2 with 10 seconds left. Melrose would have one last chance and you know who they wanted to get the ball to, Jones but Kirby’s defense would force them to throw the ball to Adonis Thomas who was immediately trapped forcing a 3 which went to the right giving Melrose the season’s first upset, 73-71.

Chris Price led the Cougars with 22 points with Chris House adding 14 points and 11 boards. Chris Jones led all scorers with a 30 piece. Adonis Thomas had a good game scoring 20. The Cougars advance to tomorrow’s semifinal against Craigmont at 7:30.
