Double OT Gives Lady Spartans The Win
A day after you had your dressing and ham, it was time to get full again, with basketball that is as the final day of the Mlk Invitational Tournament kicked off its championship games with the Millington Lady Trojans and the White Station Lady Spartans.  This game featured lead change after lead change and two overtimes and 33 points from a senior guard.  Kaitlin Murphy of White Station would tie the score on two free throws to make the score 52-52 giving the Lady Trojans the ball as they would hold for a last shot with over a minute remaining. They would turn the ball over giving White Station a seemingly easy lay up but they could not convert taking the game into overtime. In a strange circumstance, the same exact situation would occur after in overtime. Chi Chi Okuwumbua would almost get an and 1 but the ball rolled out of the rim giving her two free throws with 2:20 left in overtime. With the game tied at 55-55, Millington held it again and almost turned it over before maintaining possession. Latesa Mclaughlin would find University of Memphis signee Ashley Robinson in the corner for a potentially game winning jumper but it would miss with the rebound going long. Once again, the Spartans would appear to have an easy shot for the game win but they could not capitalize sending the game into another overtime. Murphy would hit a clutch jumper from the left corner on a strong pick by Carnecia Williams that prompted foul cries by the Lady Trojans fans to give the Spartans the lead, 60-58 with 1:13 left in the game. Shots that were falling for Jasmine Newsome in the 2nd half of the game didn’t seem to fall as Millington would have to foul White Station with less than 35 seconds left but they would miss both giving Millington hope. Newsome would miss the floater again this time giving Murphy a chance to ice the game and that she did, giving the Lady Spartans the win and the MLK Tournament championship, 62-58. Championship game Mvp Kaitlin Murphy  tied for the team scoring lead with 18 with Okuwumbua also having 18. Newsome led both team in scoring with 33.
