Melrose Ladies Win, but...
Hall Has Her Way
The surprising Overton Lady Wolverines played their first regional game in over 10 years as they took on the visiting Melrose Golden Wildcats. They were looking to continue their momentum from their 1 point win over the Lady Spartans in a shocker.
Lady Golden Wildcat: April Hall gets it done but it wasn't easy.
After trailing for much of the half, Overton, got the early 3rd quarter lead thanks to a very impressive Orlandria Wilson who scored getting a rebound and putback to make the score 35-34.
Overton's super soph Orlandria Wilson
Overton point guard Lakera Cruder hit Wilson in stride for a lay up to put her team up, 39-36 with 5:50 left in the 3rd. The Golden Wildcats would make a run though with star player April Hall coming to life including an and 1 and a 3 to put Melrose back up, hushing the Overton crowd for a score of 46-44 with 1:21 left in the quarter. Indecision and youthfulness showed itself for Overton in the 4th. Danielle Patterson got a great one hand runner in the lane to put Melrose up 52-46 with 6:33 left in the game. Overton had opportunities to climb back in the game but costly mistakes took their toll on them and Coach Rosser. Melrose got a backdoor lay up after the Wolverines tried to extend the defense pushing their lead up to 10, 58-48. Overton cut the lead to 7, 62-55 with 1:25 in the 4th but a block by Kyesha Vinson and 2 free throws by Lawanda Clayborn closed the door to Overton’ season. Melrose would get the win, 66-55 to advance in the regional.
April Hall played big for her team leading all scorers with 26 points. Two of her teammates were also in double figures with Clayborn’s 12 and Kaneisha Wilson’s 10. Sophmores led Overton with Orlandria Wilson scoring 20 points and Jasmine Robinson getting 15. The Wolverines had a nice season under Coach Jamie Rosser and maybe one of the up and coming teams in Triple A. Good win Coach Newman and now it’s on to Monday.
