“Fear The Overton Lady Wolverines”
Overton Wins District Tourney Championship
As to be expected, it was Overton led by junior Jasmine Robinson against White Station and seniors Kaitlin Murphy and Chi Chi Okumubua but this game didn’t start well for Coach Durham’s team. Cold shooting was one word to describe the Lady Spartans shooting as Overton led after the first quarter, 12-4 on freshman Cortrice Golden’s two in the post. Chetavia Rutherford and senior Megan Miles hit two 3-pointers back to back to give their fans something to cheer about as White Station appeared to be coming out of their early funk. Furman signee Kaitlin Murphy’s long trey got her team close, 21-15 but the Lady Spartans off shooting haunted them again allowing for Overton to go into the locker room, 26-15. Most good teams have a player that they can go to for scoring in the second half and that person is Tootie Robinson for Overton High School. After a basket and a foul by White Station to bring them within 4 points, 33-29 it was Tootie time. Robinson would go on to score 8 of her game high 17 in the 4th quarter including 2 off her own miss to put them up, 44-33 seemingly ending the Lady Spartans hopes but White Station had one more run left. Down 46-37, Murphy would hit another 3 to make the score 46-40 with 34.7 seconds left in the game prompting Coach Durham into to call a timeout. They got steal on the inbound from Overton and nearly converted a 3-point play with 28.6 but they steal had to hope for a miracle which would not happen as Overton’s Lakeria Crowder iced the game with 2 free throws giving her team the district 15AAA Tournament Championship, 49-41.
Robinson, the tournament Mvp led all scorers with 17 with freshman Cortrice “Big Baby” Golden get 8 points with 6 coming in the first half.
