Taylor Hits For 20 In Mvp Showing
If you’re a follower of girl’s basketball through out the city, this was it. The best girl’s team in the city hands down, the Central Lady Warriors took on a young and very talented Overton squad led by Jasmine “Tootie” Robinson. From the start of the game, it didn’t look like the great game that everyone had hoped for. Arkansas State signee Jasmine Taylor hit a 3 giving her team a 14-4 early edge early in the 1st half prompting Central fans to say, this maybe an easier game than expected. Overton freshman Cornelia Fondren’s 3-pointer got her team within 4, 14-10 as Central’s normally potent offense looked a little stagnant.
Junior Orlandria Williams hit a big time trey giving her team its first lead of the game and a new lease on the second half with Overton going in at the half, 25-23. Coach Bray’s squad just couldn’t seem to find their rhythm as the Lady Wolverines gained confidence going up by as many as 9, 38-29 on another Williams 2 with 4:30 left in the 3rd quarter. Traveling uncharted waters, Central’s girl’s dug deep and found their two young paddles, Aaliyah Whiteside and Danielle “The Truth” Ballard. Ballard got the crowd into it on a great move scoring on a deuce and dishing to Whiteside for two as Central started to show some life. Taylor would get 2 to go down and a free throw with under 30 seconds left but Robinson got a lay-up  to end the 3rd 45-43, Overton. Whiteside and Taylor come out hot in the final quarter going trading basket after basket for Coach Bray with Taylor’s jumper in the post culminating in a 6 point Central lead with 4:15 left in the game.  Robinson proved why many say she’s the best guard in the junior class taking over the scoring role for her team. She hit a 3 and a tough shot to get her team right back in it, 55-54 with 3:24 remaining. Junior Karisma Tyson picked up a loose ball and scored at the 1:55 mark with Overton trailing by 1 but Central wanted to run some clock prompting Overton to foul Erica Burgess of Central. The biggest turnover of the game occurred on the next possession for Overton as Central implored a trap forcing Williams into throwing the ball to Central. Burgess would be fouled again this time only making 1 of 2 free throws still letting Overton have a chance but they would squander that chance away again with another turnover this time stepping on the baseline. Senior Middle Tenn State signee Mimi Ajanuku stepped to the line to close the Wolverines chances hitting both shots giving her team a 6 point lead with 21.6 second left. Robinson would hit a clutch 3 pointer for her team with 10.3 seconds with her team still having a chance but they still had to foul Central hoping they would miss. Didn’t happen, Burgess would make two free throws giving them the win and City championship, 65-59.

Taylor had the high for her team with 20 points with Ballard and Whiteside scoring 15 and 14 points respectively. Robinson lead all scorers with 21 points.
