Central Gets Revenge

Assertive Tim Peete Hits For 24

When Melrose beat the Golden Wildcats the last time, they were without Maceo Harmon,Cameron Clear and Tyler Stone but yet they only managed to win by about 8 points. Something told me that tonight would be different. The normally much laid back Tim Peete came out on a mission early. Peete’s 3 in the 2nd quarter gave his team the early lead, 15-12. Coach Andre Applewhite of Central would receive a tech for arguing what he thought was a charge giving Melrose the ball and the lead thanks to a Chris Mason 3 in the 2nd quarter.
Wilkerson for 2
Melrose’s lead would increase in the second half going up as much as 9 points, 40-31 with 4:50 left in the 3rd quarter. Things would become a little tense as Tyler Stone would grab a rebound and appear to elbow Chris Jones on purpose. Adonis Thomas would get his first 2 of the game going into the 4th. Tim Peete’s jumper made it 57-55 with 2:00 remaining in regulation but Chris Sledge would put them up thanks to a lay up. Central was still up 59-57 with 59 seconds but Peete fumbled a pass from his teammate that led to a Chris Jones short corner jumper to tie the game 59-59 with 29 seconds left. Melrose wanted to trap and force Central into a turnover instead, they would leave Jarnell Stokes wide open for a lay up with 2.2 seconds left. The Golden Wildcats would have a chance but their pass would be intercepted by a Warrior defender giving Central its biggest win of the year, 61-59. Tim Peete would lead all scorers with 24 points. Tevin Wilkerson was the leader for his team with 17.
Central Talent Too Much For Melrose

Melrose Upset Hopes Dashed In 4th

As I walked in the gym Thursday night, there were two things that I noticed immediately. One, how many fans were there early and two, the score, 16-16 and thinking to myself, the Lady Warriors are in for a dog fight. Central’s normally potent offense seemed to be a little stagnant late in the 1st quarter as Melrose the momentum as the half winded down. April Hall’s driving lay up off the window would give her team a chance as Central found itself in a close game.
No upset for Melrose
Coach Bray’s luck took a turn for the worse as Mimi Ajanuku picked up her third foul as Melrose looked to implore a different approach in the second half. Coach Newman looked isolate Central’s defenders from drives to the basket and if worked for a while. Senior guard Lawanda Clayborn was on the money as she made basket after basket including a tying basket to make the score, 37-37 with 4:40 left in the game. Junior sharpshooter, Taneisha Lurry would hit a 3 to start the 4th quarter as some fans in the crowd started to think her comes Coach Newman’s patented stall approach if he goes up. Clayborn would fight hard for a rebound off her team’s miss and get the basket and freebie to put her team up 3, 47-44. Could it be? Was Central, the number one girls team in the city on tap to be upset. Not quite, freshman Aaliyah Whiteside would hit a big 3 to tie and the run began for her team. They would go on to outscore the Lady Golden Wildcats 11-2 over a 3 minute stretch to make their lead, 60-49 after a great pass for Erica Burgess to Danielle Ballard. Too much talent, simply too much talent as Central would go on for the win, 67-60. Senior Arkansas State signee, Jasmine Taylor paced her team with 18 points. Ballard chipped in with 14. Lawanda Clayborn led all scorers with 23.
