Brown’s Putback Sinks Melrose’s City Title
Pharaohs Rally To Win The City Championship

No disrespect to the other teams that won the City Championship on Thursday night but this was the game that the huge crowd had been waiting to see, 901PrepScoop’s number one team, the Raleigh Egypt Pharaohs against the Melrose Golden Wildcats. This was supposed to be the game of the year, well at the most anticipated game of the week but the referees had an influence early. Anthony Jones hit a 3-pointer on Raleigh’s first possession but wait, a technical foul on him for mouthing after the made 3 sending Coach Jimmy Adams into a rage on the sideline. Melrose junior forward Nate Rucker was involved scoring on the left handed hook and dunking the ball with authority on a nice pass from a teammate as Melrose jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Raleigh went ahead on 2 of Joe Brady’s 17 points but once again, another technical foul on Raleigh with 3:21 left in the 1st quarter.  Anthony Jones was back in for the Pharaohs after a brief stay on the bench and he immediately excited the crowd with a vicious dunk as his team went into the 2nd quarter up 4 points. Senior sharpshooter Tromarcus Toney hit to back to back 3-pointers and Chris Jones got a tough bucket plus the free one to put Melrose up 28-23 on a 8-2 run. Gentry Hines showed why he’s one of the most wanted seniors in the city hitting a nice step back j in the left corner and then hitting deep 3 tying the score 33-33. Raleigh’s offense went cold scoring only 3 points the last 3 minutes of the 1st half allowing Melrose to go into the second half with momentum and a 7 point lead, 45-38. A run from Melrose was coming; everyone sensed it and it all started with their catalyst, Jones. He penetrated Raleigh’s D scoring on the easy one, hit another jumper and assisted Nino Johnson on a dunk as Melrose went up 10. The Pharaohs looked deflated as Toney seemed to put a dagger in them with a 3 at the end of the 3rd to make the score 64-51 but some how; you just knew it wasn’t over. One person told me, “Man I want to leave but I may read your site tonight and it may say wow, you should have stayed”. Guess what, he was right. Melrose’s two straight turnovers led to 4 points by Raleigh, 2 by Anthony Jones. Raleigh seemed to be right there to get it to a one possession game but reserve guard Cedric Bee let the ball go through his hands giving Melrose the ball with 3:00 minutes. Adonis Thomas grabbed a missed shot and put it in putting his team back up 6 but he would pick up his 5th foul with 2:21 left. With Melrose looking a little shaky, they forced shots and looked very tight down the stretch. Jones would get 4 points in a row, one on a nice baseline move and the basket putting Raleigh up, 71-70 with 1:00 minute remaining in the game. The Pharaohs would have their chance to ice the game but costly turnovers on carry calls gave Melrose a chance at the title. Senior Chris Mason had a chance to put Melrose up 1 at the line but he would miss his second free throw giving the ball to Raleigh Egypt. Hines drives straight down the center of the court putting up a short jumper in the middle of the lane but his shot missed everything but and you knew it was coming, jersey’s in the air, Tank Brown on the put back at the buzzer giving his team the city title, 73-71 in one of the best games that I’ve seen in a long time.
3 players from Raleigh were tied with 17 point a piece including, Hines, Brown and Jones. Senior Joe Brady had 14 points. Tromarcus Toney had 17 with Nino Johnson getting 12 points and 9 boards.

Other Game
Hillcrest vs BTW
With under one minute left, Hillcrest still had a chance thanks to an easy miss on what appeared to be a easy lay up that slipped out of Kerry Love’s hands but freshman Martavious Newby’s steal sealed the deal for Btw who for the second time in a week beat the Vikings, 80-75. Newby was named Mvp teammate Larry Mcgaughy being the high point scorer with 19. Travis Bridges also 16. Lamelvin Davis led all scorers with 24.
