Jackson struggled in the 1st going 0-4 but still managed to play great defense on Saints point guard, Greg Wooten forcing Wooten into shoving him for an offensive foul. The 5’11 guard would finally get himself started with 6:30 in the second quarter, but Briarcrest star Leslie McDonald would definitely have something to do with the outcome of the game. The top 20 junior in the country hit two buckets to give the Saints confidence and make it 18-14 with 3:35 in the second. While struggling with his jumper, Jackson created with dribble drive and dish to Murrell for two then electrified the crowd with a dunk over Greg Wooten to go up 24-16. A three by Briarcrest would only put them down by 3 at the end of the 1st half, 24-21.
Wooten’s two steals started the 3rd but little known Danny Harris 6 points off great passes from Jackson kept the Saints on their heels. A Jackson 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter seemed to take a little steam out of the Saints. Jackson came alive in the 4th, hitting a 3 and a driving lay up but an intentional foul on McDonald, with 6:20 left in the 4th seemed to motivate the Briarcrest forward. McDonald began to impose his will on the Spartans, almost scoring at will but White Station always found an answer to even go up by 7 with less than 4 minutes remaining. Freshman Andre Hollins was left alone under the basket for a lay up before McDonald got an offensive rebound and putback to make it 51-49. Pressure forced White Station into a another costly turnover setting up Greg Wooten for a huge 3 with 30 seconds left to give Briarcrest their 1st lead of the game, 52-51. A silly foul by the Saints gave Sophmore guard Harry Green two free throws. He would make 1 of 2 tying it 52-52. McDonald pressured, passes to the left wing, Zettner passes to Johnny Williams for a wide open lay up giving the Saints the win at the buzzer, 54-52. McDonald’s 14 4th quarter points gave him 32 for the night with Greg Wooten also chipping in 10. Jackson led the Spartans with 21 points with senior big man Danny Harris scoring 10. The season is underway and 901PrepScoop is loving it.
