Warriors Holds Off Knights In 3 OT Game
With the score 91-88 after a quick score by Lacorwyn Anthony, many fans started to leave thinking that the game was all but over with 11 seconds left in the 4th quarter. Sheffield’s fans were smiling, the players were smiling and it appeared as though Sheffield had given BTW their first loss of the year.
With a chance to ice the game, Sheffield’s Chris Crawford stepped to the line but a missed opportunity on a one and one would give the Warriors another look to tie. Anthony would drive the ball hard to the rim but get his shot blocked but freshman Martavious Newby would pick it up and hand it to senior Larry Mcgaughy who would hit a big 3 at the buzzer to tie the game and send the game into overtime, 91-91 5’10 guard Travis Bridges started to show why he’s one of the better point guards in the city scoring on his team’s first play of the OT. Chris Crawford would hit a trey to make the score, 96-93 with 2:30. Bridges would find the Love, Kerry Love that is on a lay up to make the score 97-96 with 1:50. With the Knights up 100-97, there was Mcgaughy again with a 3 to tie it. Crawford would have a chance to win it but his shot would go long to send the game into overtime for the second time. The Warriors decided to step it up and play Warrior basketball. Mcgaughy started it out with a 3 in the 3rd overtime to put the Warriors up by 3. They would go up 5 on a Newby tip but Chris Crawford was there for a fade away to cut the lead to 3, 105-102 with 2:50 left in quarter. Kerry Love went through the defense to score but Mcgaughy who hit big shots the entire game, came up with 2 big blocked shots when Sheffield had a chance to cut it to a one possession game. Sheffield’s boat seemed to sail as they looked tired not getting rebounds as BTW twice in a row at the free throw line, out fought them for loose balls. Upset, not yet, as BTW would hold off a valiant effort by Sheffield, 113-104. Four Warrior players were in double figures with freshman Martavious Newby having his breakout game of the season, scoring 28 points. Mcgaughy and Kerry Love had 22 and 21 points respectively. Chris Crawford would lead all scorers with 31 points with Cordario Golden getting 22 points.
