Ridgeway 9th Graders Capture The City Championships
Brandon Lewis Play Big
With Middle School City championships over, it was on to Ridgeway on Thursday as the Roadrunners looked to cap off an undefeated season against BTW led by 6’1 guard Martavious Newby. The Roadrunners made to it the city championship by beating Craigmont and BTW had knocked off Whitehaven but that was then and now, they wanted a 9th grade city championship. Ridgeway post player Brandon Lewis was on his game Thursday. He showed a newly improved touch since I saw him last year scoring on the 5-10 ft jumpers on two straight possessions and using the glass on the others scoring 8 points in a row but Roadrunners still found themselves down 9, heading into the 3rd quarter, 42-31.
The free wheeling BTW Warriors not shy about launching 3 found themselves not hitting the shots that they normally hit as Ridgeway fought back thanks to steal as they actually went up, 46-45 with 4 minutes left in the 3rd. Newby perhaps the best player on the floor in the game hit a trey and hit a pull up jumper to end the 3rd with his team regaining the lead, 54-52. 901PrepScoop’s Middle School player of the year last season, Adam Weary would score on lay in but Clarence Wilson of BTW scored going around Brandon Lewis who was looking to keep himself from fouling out of the game. Weary would get another key basket with under a 1 minute but the biggest basket of the game was made by a key reserve, former Ridgeway Middle Markell Morgan. He would knock down a midrange jumper with 30 seconds left putting Ridgeway up but the game wasn’t over.BTW fans went irate when what appeared to be a jump ball became Ridgeway’s ball with 16.8 seconds forcing the Warriors to foul them. On the one and one, Ridgeway would miss giving the ball back to BTW with 13 seconds left in the game but they could not get the ball in the hands of Newby giving Ridgeway the 9th grade city championship, 69-67.
