The last time the Hamilton Wildcats came to Murfreesboro, they came away with a state title in 2015. Fast forward just a few years later and they are back, different classification (Double A) and of course a new cast of players but 2 are here from that last title, Kevon McMahon and 6’2 Martrell Brooks. Jordan Johnson, one of the city’s best 2018 guards and James Dejesus is another key addition and all have been great thus far in the state tournament as well as Julian Woods. Brooks said, “It’s not necessarily a difference but at the same time it is, when I came in 9th grade, I had playing experience but now that I’ve came with my time and put them on my back, I feel like it’s on us”. Hamilton head coach Will Smith is in his first stint at the state tournament as head coach and he’s says it’s a product of a lot of hard work. “Guys buying in, they’ve worked hard and put a lot of time in to get to this point, they deserve what they’re getting, I’m happy for them”. They will face a good Knoxville Fulton team who won in Double overtime fashion yesterday over Stratford in the state championship game at 6:00 p.m.
Douglas has put together the best winning streak in Tennessee this year, I think 20 in a row now and after completely blowing out their opponent yesterday, find themselves with a chance to win a state title I think for the first time in school history. Coach Williams said, “I’ve been coming to the state tournament for the last 20 years, watching and my dream has always been to come out that tunnel have my team behind and have a chance to win a gold ball and this year, we have the team to do that”. Douglas is the best pressing team that I’ve seen in quite awhile yesterday forcing 32 turnovers and just overpowering a Livingston Academy team who I’m sure has never seen a team apply pressure the whole game like that. They’ve got contributions from point guard Jordan Harris, Martico Washington, Devyn Payne and Michael James who had a game high 19 points yesterday. I can’t forget about Antavious Buford as well who has been saddled with a little foul trouble in the first 2 games but is another that’s key to what they do and 6’6 Job Nebk. I love the Red Devils chances today against a good Loretto team. I have a feeling they will be cutting down the nets.
