Top 5 High School Teams In Memphis

Kevon McMahan (Hamilton HS)

The season seems like it just started but the city championship games are approaching this week at White Station High School. After that, it’s gets real, the district tournaments start across the city and then, the beginning of moth ball season. If you don’t know what that means, one loss in the first one district game, your season is over so for everyone except the district winners I think, that first game is critical.

I’ve done a top 5 twice this season and just wanted to give my opinion on who my top 5 teams are as of right now.

East High School (19-3) Blow out after blow out, East has gotten their mojo back and going into their last regular season game against Whitehaven at Whitehaven, they will be heavy favorites again. They will play against Southwind on Saturday in the city championship game in the finale of the evening, the first time these two have seen each other since last year’s state championship game. The Mustangs aren’t looking ahead and must continue to take care of business in every game going forward and I think they are prepared to do that. Again, I’m assuming that they will play Southwind, I haven’t heard who their opponent is as of yet.

Hamilton High School (25-2) The Wildcats face Mitchell in the Double A title game Saturday in what should be a pretty good game. Hamilton has weapons at the guard spot and rely on their edition of big 3, Jordan Johnson, Martrell Brooks and Kevon McMahan but get contributions nightly from seniors, James Dejesus and Julian Woods. Anytime you have the caliber of guards that the have, you can get it done and the Wildcats to me are the best Double A team in the state. With that said though, their district is tough but the Wildcats have been tougher to beat this year.

Southwind High School (22-1) Had a sizable lead against Ridgeway last Friday night before a late run by the Roadrunners but timely shots by Quentin Williams and a few plays from Mark Freeman and the Jaguars got the win. Now presumably and I’m not for sure but presumably, they play East on Saturday night. It will take a herculean type performance from their role guys and a big time scoring game from Freeman for them to stay close the way East has looked lately. They will need Cameron Jones to score more than he’s usually accustomed to as well.  I guess you could say anything is possible though, they do only have one loss on their record

Whitehaven High School (18-3) The Tigers got bad news last week when forward Cameron Jones broke his foot against White Station and with him done for the season, the Tigers now have to find someone to take up his scoring and rebounding. Not just that, his leadership as well but now it will have to be done collectively for the remainder of the season. Will it be Matthew Murrell, Alvin Miles or Latrell Carter?  They got a game winning 3 the other night from Jesse Payne, he will be another who they will be counting on now as well. They play tomorrow night at Whitehaven against East in their last district game in what should a standing room only game.

Olive Branch High School (20-4) Won big last night over Center Hill and the 2 games before that weren’t close either in margin of victory. Olive Branch is gearing up for their district tournament that they go into as the favorites
