Area Championships On The Line Tonight

Sharing is caring!

4 league championships will be decided tonight across the city before the state tournament begins on Saturday. For each team playing tonight, they have already punched their tickets into the state sectionals but each wants to have a better seed to be able to advance further in the tournament. The Lester and Lowrance game will be played on tomorrow night at John P. Freeman. Without to much on and on, let’s get into it.

Small School

Bellevue vs Ida B Wells– Before season if I told you that one of these schools was undefeated heading into this game, you probably would say, oh that’s easy, it’s Bellevue but that would be wrong. Ida B Wells is probably the surprise of the city heading into this game, undefeated and I can’t sit here and say I did my due diligence on this team because I’m really surprised by their record. I don’t know a lot about them but having all Ws in the column with no Ls says a lot and Bellevue better take this team seriously and I’m sure they will. Coach Taylor knows that Bellevue is viewed across the area as one of the teams to beat so teams will bring their A games to them every game. This one will be no different and it’s starts with Bellevue’s guard play which rivals any team in the city with AJ Dillworth, Jr Jacobs and Cartier Beverly. They aren’t the only ones but as they go, so will Bellevue. I’m not sure if Ida B Wells has seen the caliber of guards that the Bobcats have and that will be the difference in my opinion.

Lester vs Lowrance– In their first match-up, Lester jumped out to a huge lead but Lowrance made a run late to make that game interesting but the Lions were able to pull it off late. In the second game at Lowrance, Lester beat them by 10 plus points but I have a feeling, the 3rd one will be really good and a little different. The reason being if some don’t know, Lowrance will be riding a high after beating John P Freeman by a huge margin on their home floor last night. That means that Lowrance will be extremely confident and why shouldn’t they be after that win and believing that they can beat Lester and the Area 2B champs should be weary. Only thing is, will the thought of them with already 2 losses to Lester hurt mentally as they prepare for this game tomorrow? Lester has more talent, bigger, little bit better bench and Markese Washington who Lowrance has a hard time stopping. I think this one will be pretty good early as Lowrance will come out throwing  haymakers . If Lester withstands that and takes the emotion out of it early on, things should move in their favor. Lowrance will need big games from Andre Jackson and Braxton Jumper as well as Javar Daniels who must use his height and length to his advantage inside. If they can get huge games from them, you never know, maybe they can sneak the upset but again, tough task against Lester. This game will be tomorrow night at John P Freeman at 6:30 pm.

Dexter vs Kingsbury- First year coach Jamie Rosser has done a really good job this year after losing a lot from last year and now they find themselves headed back to the sectional. Dexter with Larry Finch Jr is much improved this year from previous years.

Large School

Havenview vs A Maceo Walker – The Tigers of Havenview won big yesterday over American Way and now take on A Maceo Walker who in their first year in Large Schools made the sectionals,  in tonight’s game at 6:30 pm. A Maceo Walker got a 1 point win last night over Colonial last  in a pretty good game that saw Donnell Frazier take over in the 3rd and they were able to get a late game lay up from Treyshaun Dean-Brown for the win. Now both players along with Mikhal Stewart will have to contend with a big Havenview team in their home gym and try to get the win and Area 2 Large title. Havenview has the advantage because they are playing in their gym and that does mean a lot, their comfortable their and will have a lot of fans. A Maceo seems like a resilient team and they won’t go away easily if they find themselves down a few points late. Dean-Brown and Deuce Ford Jr will be up against each other in this for the battle inside that could determine the game. Last night he got into foul trouble and while they were able to get good minutes from their reserve big, they can ill afford for Dean Brown to be on the bench tonight to early.

Ridgeway Vs Germantown- Last but certainly not least, Ridgeway vs Germantown, part 4. Germantown has won the last 3 games but the one game that they lost on the season was to drum roll please? Ridgeway at Ridgeway. Tonight is for the Area 3 title and I’m sure both teams want that on mantle heading into the state sectional. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Ridgeway has enough to win the sectional this year, they are really talented and need exceptional performances tonight. One has to be from Chip Brunt, the other, Kristian Spencer. I expect EJ Smith to have a nice game but both of them need to be big and I think both can have good games. Brunt has to take the open 3 and be aggressive when it comes to him. Germantown should just keep doing what they are doing, relying on Cameron Miller, Chris Martin, Deshun Dunn and Daniel E. I won’t try spell the last name of Daniel because I don’t want to destroy it but he’s a big piece to what they do. Their point guard play has been good lately from Jhamal Ross and it needs to continue tonight. I think it will come down to turnovers and on who gets the edge on rebounding. I think both these teams are evenly matched in some spots but it’s so hard to pick against Germantown right now because they have been playing so well. It’s hard to beat a team 4 times in one season and Ridgeway has that going for them and playing at the house helps to. I expect another good one in that one.

Snowden Vs Cordova- On paper, Snowden looks like it has the advantage especially with their guards however, they did split this year so it’s going to be a close game more than likely. Snowden started the year off hot but have since cooled a bit but still a dangerous team for anyone because of the play of Kyler Dandridge, Jamarius Brooks, Madricus Pittman and Armani McFagdon. Again on paper, it looks like clearly they are the favorites but Marcellus Boyd will have something to say about that. Cordova beat White Station last night but they will be in a battle today but with ticket already stamped for state, hopefully they won’t just rest on that.

Schilling Farms vs Houston– Schilling upset Elmore Park last night ending their season and will now take on Houston with the DJ Sharp and the Stegall brothers (Will and Ben). After starting out the year undefeated, Schilling took some bumps and bruises but are now in a position to win their area which is quite and accomplishment. I’m sure Houston’s game plan will be to contain Matthew Strokes and Alec Tipton while Schilling will look to slow down Sharp and slow down his motor.
